espite obvious tensions and different opinions on many issues between Russia and the USA, young people from Russia and the Republic of Buryatia in particular still want to study in the USA.

For example, FLEX, an exchange program for Russian junior high school students attracted about 200 students in the Republic in the fall 2008, though only nine of them were to go the USA.
According to the survey conducted in the fall 2007, forty five freshmen and sophomore students of ESSTU expressed a wish to study in the United States, nineteen said "no" and thirty six chose a different country. One hundred students were surveyed in total.

America is a home for about 3,500 colleges and universities where students pursue bachelor and master degrees. There are state and private colleges and universities. They are known as "higher education."

"A college is usually for undergraduates, whereas a university is a collection of one or more colleges, plus a graduate school and various professional schools. Colleges mainly teach but universities, with their large numbers of graduate students, also place emphasis on research."

The array of the US higher educational institutions may overwhelm anyone. But there is a distinct group of schools that stands out and is exceptionally desired by both American and overseas prospective students. This is a so called "The Ivy League", elite private schools that give pride and good job opportunities to their graduates.
